The Sustainable Stylist Podcast
The Sustainable Stylist Podcast is for independent hairstylists who are tired of being told that a full book is the finish line. Hosted by Jen, a hairstylist with over thirteen years behind the chair who went independent in 2018 and learned the hard way, through undercharging, overworking, and figuring it out with no roadmap, this show goes beyond hair. Each episode blends real business strategy, mindset, and holistic wellness to help independent stylists build a career that is not just busy, but actually sustainable and profitable. If you are booked solid and still feel broke, this is the podcast that finally hands you the roadmap nobody gave you.

The Real Truth About Stylist Burnout (and How to Build a Sustainable Career)
In this episode of The Sustainable Stylist, I share how I nearly quit the hair industry despite being booked solid after going independent in 2018, undercharging, saying yes to everyone, and packing my schedule until I hit burnout. I explain how burnout can look like “success” from the outside and walk through key signs: dread, work feeling flat, resentment, physical symptoms, and fantasizing about quitting. I also cover what actually helps you come back—changing the structure of an overbooked business, adding buffer time and real breaks, and addressing the money piece by raising prices so you can work less without under-earning. I challenge the belief that worth equals productivity and invite you to take one small step this week to create breathing room, plus share my course The Sustainable Stylist and the waitlist opening September 30th.

Burnout Behind Success
SPEAKER_00I want to tell you about the version of me that almost quit this industry. I was book solid every single day, back to back, and barely enough time to eat. From the outside, I looked super successful, like I had made it. And on the inside, I was completely empty, running on fumes, dreading the work I used to love. If any part of that feels a little too familiar right now, then this episode is the one I really need you to hear. Today we're talking about the truth about burnout, the real truth, how to spot it before it takes you down, how to come back from it, and how to build a career that doesn't quietly ask you to run yourself to the ground. Welcome to the Sustainable Stylist, the podcast for hairstylists who want a career that lasts without burning out behind the chair. I'm Jen Alden, and I'm here to share the real lessons on building a business you love, protecting your energy, and creating a life that feels as good as your work looks. Because doing hair should light you up, not wear you down. Wherever you are in your journey, pull up a chair, this one's for you. So let me take you back for a second because I think my own story sets this whole thing
How I Hit the Wall
SPEAKER_00up. When I went independent back in 2018, I did it with no help at all. Nobody handed me a guide. So I did what most of us do. I undercharged. I said yes to everything and everyone. I packed my books as tight as they could go because in my mind, more clients meant more success. That was the math I believed. And for a while, it kind of worked until it really, really did not. I hit a wall I didn't even know was coming. And the scariest part was that I was doing everything right on paper. I was busy, I was booked, and I was burning out anyway.
Burnout Is Quiet
SPEAKER_00And that's the first thing I want you to understand about burnout. It doesn't always look like what you think it looks like. We picture burnout as somebody falling apart, calling out, dropping the ball. But so often burnout is quiet. It hides inside the person who is still showing up, still smiling, still getting it all done. It hides inside the high achiever, which means you can be completely burned out and still look to everyone around you like you're absolutely thriving. So let us talk about how to actually spot it because I think a lot of us are living inside it without ever naming
Five Warning Signs
SPEAKER_00it. I'm going to walk through some of the signs, and I just want you to notice gently, if any of these are you. The first one is dread. You wake up and there is this heaviness about the day ahead, even about clients you genuinely adore. It's not about them. It's about how empty your tank is. The second one is that the work starts to feel flat. That spark, that creativity, the thing that made you fall in love with this in the first place, it goes a little gray. You're still doing beautiful work, but you can't really feel it anymore. The third one is resentment. And this one sneaks up on people. You start feeling this low simmer of frustration toward your clients, your schedule, your whole business. And then you feel guilty for feeling it, which just piles more on top. The fourth one shows up in your body because burnout is never only in your head. It's the tension you carry in your shoulders and your wrist and your lower back. It's being exhausted, but somehow not sleeping well. It's getting sick the second you finally slow down. Our bodies keep the score and they will send up a flare long before our minds are willing to admit anything is wrong. And the fifth one is the big one. It's when you start fantasizing about quitting entirely. When you catch yourself thinking, maybe I should just walk away from it all. And I want to say something really clearly to you if that is where you are. That thought does not mean you chose the wrong career. Often it just means you have been in this career in a way that was never actually sustainable. There's a really important difference between those two things.
Recovery That Works
SPEAKER_00So now let us talk about coming back because you can come back. I'm living proof, but I want to be honest with you about what actually works because it's probably not what the hustle culture out there has been selling you. The first thing, and I know this is the hard one, is that you can't rest your way out of life that is fundamentally overbooked. A bubble bath is lovely, a day off is lovely, but if you go right back into the exact same overpacked schedule on Saturdays, that's not recovery. That's just a pit stop on the road to the same wall. Real recovery means we have to look at the structure underneath. We have to look at the actual container of your
Fix the Schedule
SPEAKER_00business. Which brings me to the second thing. Your schedule is allowed to change. You're allowed to build in buffer time between clients so you can breathe and drink some water and reset. You're allowed to take a real lunch like a human being. You're allowed to block off a day that is yours and to stop treating every open slot on your calendar as something you're obligated to fill. Those open spaces are not you being lazy. Those open spaces are what keep you well enough to keep doing this at all.
Pricing to Prevent Burnout
SPEAKER_00And the third thing is the money piece because burnout and under-earning are so tightly braided together. Think about it. When you're undercharging, you have to take on more clients just to make ends meet, which means you overwork, which drains you dry. But when you're paid what you're actually worth, you could see fewer clients, give each of them so much more of your real energy, and still take care of yourself and your bills. Raising your prices is not just a money decision. It is one of the most powerful things you can possibly do for your own well-being.
Break the Burnout Cycle
SPEAKER_00Now, I want to zoom out because here's what I really want this episode to leave you with. I don't just want to help you recover from burnout this one time. I want to help you build a career that stops requiring you to burn out over and over again. Because for so many of us, it's a cycle. We crash, we recover a little, we climb right back into the exact same patterns, and we crash all over again. And I want to break the cycle for you for good. That means letting go of this belief so many of us carry, that our worth is measured by how much we produce. That exhaustion is some kind of badge of honor, that we have to earn our rest by grinding ourselves down first. None of that is true. You're not a machine, you're a whole human being with a body and a nervous system and a life outside of that chair. And the goal was never to survive this career. The goal is to actually get to enjoy it for the long haul.
One Small Change This Week
SPEAKER_00So here is one small thing to carry with you this week. I want you to look at your calendar for the next few days, and I want you to find one single spot where you can give yourself just a little bit of breathing room. Maybe it's a 15-minute gap between two clients. Maybe it's just finally taking a real lunch. Maybe it's one thing you let yourself say no to, just one. Because taking care of yourself is not the reward you get after you build the business. Taking care of yourself is part of how you build a business that actually lasts.
Sustainable Stylist Invite
SPEAKER_00This is honestly the whole reason I created the Sustainable Stylist. It's my new course for independent stylists who are ready to stop running on empty and start building a business around their life instead of building their entire life around their business. We get into the schedule, the pricing, the systems, and the mindset, all the real pieces that make this work sustainable for the long haul. So you never have to hit that wall the way I did. If this episode hit home for you today, come join the wait list. It opens up on September 30th. The link is right there in the show
Final Burnout Reframe
SPEAKER_00notes. So here's what I want you to hold on to. Burnout is not proof that you failed. And it's not proof that you picked the wrong life. It's your body and your spirit telling you that something about the way you've been working needs to change. And the incredible news is it absolutely can. You can build this differently. You can absolutely love this work again. And you deserve a career that gives back to you as much as you pour into it. I'll see you in the next episode.
